  • Hardware sizing factor

    Team

I would like to know what are the key factors that influences the hardware sizing like CPU, Memory, Storage needs , Stack ( whether Web & App together or separate) etc.

What do we consider when deciding the hardware / platform?

I heard that people said , number of orders ( Shipment, PO),Location, Item master, Ship QTY, Bulk Plan issues, Concurrent users , reports , peak & non-peak orders, expected performance speed, etc

I would appreciate if someone can provide some guidance, list of the top 20/10 / 5 ....

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Hardware sizing factor

There are a lot of factors which influence what type of hardware to purchase. Chris may be able to provide more but here is a few:

    Orders
    Shipments
    Rate Records evaluated per shipment
    Bulk Planning
    Reports (depending on how many)

If you are pushing more than 100k shipments per month you a quad app, web,db server at the minimum.

        Re: Hardware sizing factor

To be honest, sizing OTM is a complex process. We have a set of formulas worked out that take in all the various volume information, the optimization and other OTM features that will be utilized, etc. We then assign a certain workload factor, based on the performance of each platform and hardware configuration that is used to calculate the final hardware sizing.

I can't get too much into the details, as we consider this part of our proprietary IP, but suffice to say that what Nick has provided will send you down the right path.

How long does the sizing exercise typically take?

            Re: Hardware sizing factor

Depends on the complexity. I would say as little as a few hours to as many as 3 days for a very complex system.

                Re: Hardware sizing factor

                Hello,

Yes, sizing in OTM is also a complex type of work, it is all about assumptions

                e.g. in Shipment Management
If you know approximate amount transmissions going in/out from OTM then, you can predict the sizing but, may not be fixed

                Thank you!
