  • [SOLVED] Shipment as work vs. Order base links

    Hi all,

We have a scenario which we're not sure how to model in OTM. Some of our orders don't have a known final destination until it gets to a Center(C1) which is a mandatory leg for all orders from Origin(Source Location). So the planning cannot take place until the goods arrive at C1.

How should we best model this in OTM? We've thought about using Shipment as work for the mandatory first leg Origin->C1 but how can we link it to the next leg for eg. C1->hub->final destination?

How about order base links ? Our other concern is how can we generate the sell shipment without showing the stops in between. Thanks for your help!

    Hi Kee,

We have been experiencing a similar scenario; we receive SAWs for our ocean shipments and we want to plan the dray shipment in OTM and have found kind of difficult to connect the same Order Release to the SAW and the planned dray shipment.

Have you tried planning through the cross dock to a fictitious destination and later using the "Divert Shipment" action to change the destination of the final leg?

About the sell side shipment, you just need to create a separate sell itinerary as well as the respective sell rates. OTM will plan direct sell shipments without showing the intermediary stops.

    Hope this helps,

Re: Shipment as work vs. Order base links

You may want to look at using Order Movements to handle this kind of scenario. If you have an order release going from A - C and you create order movements for this based on an itinerary with two legs (A-B, and B-C), you will get two order movements created.

      OM1: A - B
      OM2: B - C

You can build shipments for OM1, and then when you know the actual destination of OM2 to be D, change the destination of that to be D and build the shipment. The only thing I am not sure of is if you can manually modify the destination of OM2 via the UI. It may be worth checking and depending on the actual complexity of your requirements may be a suitable solution.

On the sell shipment question, it is exactly as Alejandro says - the creation of sell side shipments is based on sell side itineraries. So you just need to create a single leg sell side itinerary from A-D.

Thanks again bmj for your help. We have however ruled out using Order Movement because we want to optimize cost during planning. So if there's another suggestion other than using Order Movement, we would love hear about it, thanks!

Thanks Alejandro for your help. Could you please clarify on the cross dock and fictitious destination suggestion? So take my scenario for example, Origin -> C1, are you saying that we should add a fictitious destination to this leg (Origin->C1(as cross dock)->Fictitious Destination) so that we may use "Divert Shipment" to change the destination of the final leg? We have not used Divert Shipment before so we would appreciate the clarification, thanks again for your help!

            Hi Kee,

My suggestion is to have the orders from Origin->Fictitious Destination in OTM and plan them through a cross dock so you will have 2 shipments (supposing that you do not have a handling shipment):
            - Shipment 1 from the Origin ->C1 (Xdock)
            - Shipment 2 from C1 (Xdock) -> Fictitious destination

Once you know the final destination of the Shipment 2 you can use the Divert Shipment action (Action/Change Shipment Route/Divert Shipment) to manually change the destination location.

            Hope this helps,

            Alejandro B.
